1. March 19, McConnell Foundation, Redding: This event will be focused on new research around fire severity and fire regimes in southern Cascade and Klamath mixed-conifer forests. It will include presentations by a few of the lead researchers on this topic: Jay Miller, Carl Skinner, and Malcolm North. It will also include a diverse panel of land managers, who will discuss the opportunities for and challenges to incorporating fire science into management plans. This event will focus on new research about wildfire spatial patterns, size, and effects, and help clarify some of the management implications of these new findings. 2. March 21, Humboldt State University, Arcata: This event will highlight local fire researchers and managers in Humboldt County. We’ve organized an awesome lineup of speakers who are covering a wide range of locally relevant topics: sudden oak death-wildfire interactions, conifer encroachment, the effectiveness and impacts of mechanical mastication treatments, fire effects on fish, and more. Phil van Mantgem will kick off the event with a presentation on “Fires of the future along the North Coast”; if you’ve never seen Phil give a talk, you should definitely make an effort to come!http://ucanr.edu/local issues local science

3. March 27, webinar: On March 27 at 11 am PDT, Frank Lake will give the first webinar in our spring series. The title of his talk is “Incorporating tribal traditional knowledge and community values into wildland fire management.” The information he’ll present is relevant to folks outside our region, so please feel free to share it broadly. http://www.cafiresci.org/2013-webinars

4. April 25-26, Hopland, CA: The spring meeting of the Northern California Prescribed Fire Council will take place at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center on April 25-26. Ken Pimlott, Director of CAL FIRE, will be a featured speaker, and Sarah McCaffrey, Researcher with the USFS Northern Research Station, has also tentatively agreed to come out from Chicago to join us. We will have the usual full-day conference, evening social at a local brewery (this time with a featured speaker, Ramona Butz, talking about Rx fire in Africa), and a field tour on the 2nd day.
