Southern California Wildfires Raise Concerns for Community Safety

May 5, 2013 – The recent Springs Fire in Ventura County near Malibu, on the Pacific Coast, highlights the threats to homes and property from wildfire in communities across California. Driven by windy, dry conditions, the fire has burned close to 28,000 acres (as of 9am May 5, 2013) and many homes and commercial properties remain under threat.

East of Los Angeles, the Summit Fire near the towns of Banning and Beaumont, has burned nearly 3,000 acres, while other areas across the state continue to experience red-flag warnings. In 2012, California experienced nearly 8,000 fires that scorched more than 800,000 acres, but California officials warn a more difficult fire season is ahead and predict the number of fires in the state should increase this year.

Training Opportunity: Assessing Residential Fire Hazards

Thursday, May 2, 2013 - It’s NOT ‘luck’ or ‘a miracle’ when homes survive wildfires! According to fire science research, individual efforts DO make a difference even in the face of severe wildfire. Join us for a day of information and training to help you protect your family, home, and community from wildfire!

California Fire Safe Council is pleased to offer this important training at a significantly reduced cost, thanks to generous support provided by PG&E and a partial scholarship from the California Fire Safe Council.

About the Training:

NFPA’s “Assessing Residential Wildfire Hazards” is specially designed to give residents and Fire Safe Councils the knowledge necessary to prevent losses from wildfire while focusing on the Home Ignition Zone – defined as the home and its immediate surroundings up to 200 feet. Participants learn how to identify hazards and reduce risks before a wildfire starts.

The agenda for “Assessing Residential Wildfire Hazards” includes:

  • Module 1 The Wildfire Threat: Perceptions versus Reality
  • Module 2 Understanding Wildland/Urban Fire
  • Module 3 Identifying and Mitigating Wildfire Hazards
